Former First Lady, Secretary of State, and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has said that the United States is “totally unprepared” for the societal and economic impact of artificial intelligence. She made the comments in an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt earlier this week. The world is “racing headfirst into a new era of artificial intelligence,” she said, adding that it’s going to affect how we live, think, and relate to each other.

Clinton also pointed out that some of the smartest minds on the planet are sounding an alarm that nobody is paying attention to. People like Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, and Elon Musk have all been trying to focus the world’s attention on the risks that AI poses.

“Their alarm is artificial intelligence is not our friend,” she said. Clinton particularly mentioned AI’s impact on digital surveillance and job automation. “Everything we know and everything we say and everything we write is, you know, recorded somewhere,” she pointed out, while mentioning that the country is not prepared to deal with the fallout from significant job automation as a result of AI advancements.

Clinton doesn’t go into a lot of detail about the policies that she would like to see the government enact to she did say that the government should act quickly.

“One thing I wanted to do if I had been president was to have a kind of blue ribbon commission with people from all kinds of expertise coming together to say what should America’s policy on artificial intelligence be?,” she said.
